You have three more weeks before Christmas vacation, and you haven’t been home since August, because you live across the country, perhaps even on the other side of the world. You spent Thanksgiving at your roommate’s home, which made you crave your family even more. You think to yourself, “I don’t think I’m going to make it through the next three weeks. I miss my family so much.”

You can imagine your family carrying out the traditional Christmas activities without you. You can picture your dad spending the morning after Thanksgiving putting up Christmas lights with your older brother; your mom sneaking off in the Minnie van to do some Christmas shopping. You can imagine your family arguing while picking out the Christmas tree, and smell the sweet sugary aroma coming from the kitchen from your mom baking batches of Christmas cookies.

Your CHC pals, notice you have a terrible case of the holiday blues and suggest fun and creative ways to bring Christmas to Campus …

Let’s Decorate: Since your dorm room is looking kind of dreary, you and roomie decide to add a festive air to your living quarters. You guys decide to take SEPTA to Target and pick up a couple of decorative items; some wrapping paper, ribbons, a Minnie Christmas tree, and some ornaments.  Within hours you transform your collegiate dorm room, into a warm holiday oasis filled with Christmas cheer. Your holiday blues are starting to clear.

As you’re probably quickly realizing, college visits can get old pretty fast, even if (like me) you’re totally passionate about the college search process. Colleges will try to set themselves apart and make their tours and open houses unique, but there’s only so much they can do within that set format.

You, as the visitors, can take matters into your own hands, though.

Instead of being a passive visitor on your next college tour, turn the event into a photo scavenger hunt. The photos will give you a great way to remember exactly which college is which, while also providing you a fun base of comparison. You can make up your own scavenger hunt list based on your criteria for your future college, or you can use the following list I’ve made.

(I must admit that it’s a little biased towards CHC… but what else would you expect from a lifelong Griffin?)

At CHC, you know Halloween is almost here when the ghost hunters arrive on campus.

Every year, Student Activities hosts a lecture on ghosts and the paranormal, which is followed by a ghost hunt around the campus. In past years, we’ve welcomed Patti Starr (certified ghost hunter) and Chip Coffey(of Paranormal State and Psychic Kids on A&E). This past Wednesday, renowned demonologist John Zaffis visited CHC to present a lecture on the paranormal, from “possessed possessions” to ghosts and exorcisms, and to tour campus looking for paranormal activity.

    Chestnut Hill College

Like many CHC students, I knew Chestnut Hill College was the place for me the minute I saw it. As my mom and I followed the curve in Germantown Avenue and the school came into view above the trees, I gasped and insisted, “This is it, Mom. This is my school.” CHC isn’t one of those schools, though, that looks great above the tree-line but is rather plain in actuality—our campus is picturesque all year round:

The summer months are filled with spontaneous adventures, excitement, road trips, vacations to exotic destinations, hours spent in idle play in the warm sun, reading for pleasure, sipping lemonade, and doing absolutely nothing just because you can. However, even though the summer is composed of many wonderful elements, that only this season can bring, there is a yearning inside of me. A yearning to be back on the beautiful landscape that has become my temporary dwelling as I and many others pursue a higher education. Chestnut Hill College is a place I greatly miss and the magic that summer holds cannot stifle that.

I am longing to be back on campus and sit underneath a tree whose leaves are an array of reds, yellows, and oranges because autumn is beginning to settle in. There is a longing to meet my friends in Fitzsimmons Hall where I know I can engage in a competitive pool game or two, and cheerfully laugh at the fact that my pool playing skills are not up too par. I long to run to Fontbonne at eight o’clock on a Wednesday night because it is time for America’s Next Top Model, and I miss anticipating who will be the next unsuspected hopeful to get kicked out of the competition. I long for random trips to the mall just to get a manicure with Heather, trips into Chestnut Hill for Starbucks coffee, and random trips to the playground. I especially long for Thursday nights when Ana, Brooke, Cheryl, Krystina, Rose, Katie, Christina, Ashley and I would watch Disney movies in the Griffins Den, order pizza, and color in Care Bear color books because of the nostalgic feelings we had toward our childhood.

Just as winter transforms into spring and spring transforms into summer, summer will soon became autumn and my yearning for Chestnut Hill College will be satisfied. I will once again be at the college I am fond of; surrounded by the lovely components that make it an enjoyable place to be.
