One of the common quotes from CHC faculty email signatures is “Chestnut Hill College…celebrating 85 years of tradition and risk.” And the most celebrated tradition here (in my opinion) is Christmas Decorating Night.  The first ever Decorating Night began when students wanted to make the college halls more festive for the sisters who resided here over Christmas break when all the students moved out and celebrated the holidays with their own families.  Ever since then, the tradition has lived on.

You have three more weeks before Christmas vacation, and you haven’t been home since August, because you live across the country, perhaps even on the other side of the world. You spent Thanksgiving at your roommate’s home, which made you crave your family even more. You think to yourself, “I don’t think I’m going to make it through the next three weeks. I miss my family so much.”

You can imagine your family carrying out the traditional Christmas activities without you. You can picture your dad spending the morning after Thanksgiving putting up Christmas lights with your older brother; your mom sneaking off in the Minnie van to do some Christmas shopping. You can imagine your family arguing while picking out the Christmas tree, and smell the sweet sugary aroma coming from the kitchen from your mom baking batches of Christmas cookies.

Your CHC pals, notice you have a terrible case of the holiday blues and suggest fun and creative ways to bring Christmas to Campus …

Let’s Decorate: Since your dorm room is looking kind of dreary, you and roomie decide to add a festive air to your living quarters. You guys decide to take SEPTA to Target and pick up a couple of decorative items; some wrapping paper, ribbons, a Minnie Christmas tree, and some ornaments.  Within hours you transform your collegiate dorm room, into a warm holiday oasis filled with Christmas cheer. Your holiday blues are starting to clear.

    1. In the cafeteria, the dean of student life asks if she can join your table for lunch.
True story, the dean of student life has actually asked to join my friends and I for lunch. At CHC, students really are on a friendly basis with faculty, administration, and staff… a friendliness that extends beyond the classroom walls to meals, on-campus events, and more.

    2. The river in front of your school was moved to a more convenient location.
There is nothing the Sisters of St. Joseph can’t do. Old photos of the school show the river much closer to the academic buildings than it is today. In fact, they used to canoe right outside St. Joe’s. But, at some point in time, the administration realized that a river right in front of the academic buildings wasn’t in the best interest of the school, and so it was moved down the hill… or so the story goes.

    3. The president stops you and your parents in the hallway to chat about Navy football with you.
Sister Carol Jean Vale, CHC’s president, grew up a Navy “brat,” as did I. So, whenever I run into her in the hallways, especially if my dad is with me, she’ll stop to chat about how Navy’s football team is doing, whether they’ll beat Army this year, and so on. My dad is always impressed that Sister Carol remembers not only who he is, but also that he was in the Navy.

    4. Your football team has never lost a game. Ever.
Our football team has been undefeated since 1924… probably because we don’t have a football team. Don’t let that discourage you, though; our lack of a football team means more athletics resources can be devoted to our other sports teams. And we’ve still got tons of Griffin spirit that we put to good use at basketball games, baseball games, volleyball games, soccer games, tennis matches… you get the point.

    5. Your professors are the biggest fans of Philly sports you’ll ever meet.
Seriously, nobody knows the Eagles’ scores or the Phillies’ players the way the Sisters of St. Joseph do. They’re huge fans of Philly sports and will dress up in team colors on game days. The sports are a great way for students to bond with their professors.
