What’s great about going to Chestnut Hill College (CHC) is that it’s easy to be kept in the know about what’s happening on campus. CHC prides itself on being able to constantly communicate with its students about campus affairs. Though students can easily check out the many flyers that are posted around campus to find out when the Spring Formal is, or read the decorated bulletin boards that line the main hallway in Fournier to see what the ALD honors society is up too, many students on campus are connecting with CHC clubs through Facebook.

Almost every major club on campus and department has a Facebook page. It’s easy to be kept informed with all the happenings on campus when students become fans of their favorite campus groups, clubs, and organizations.

There are several CHC Facebook pages that students join, but I wanted to offer my top Facebook picks to YOU future Griffins.

Chestnut Hill College: CHC has its very own Facebook page where you can access pictures, great informational resources, contact information, access to a CHC calendar, and get the low down on past events and traditions that the college has. Also, through this page you are able to get updates on other departments such as CHC athletics and Logue Library. OK, so I’m not actually going to let you look in my closet, but I am going to give you an idea of what it looks like to be a Chestnut Hill College student.

One of the benefits of clubs, teams, and events in college is all the T-shirts and other apparel you get (usually for free). I own more than 25 pieces of CHC apparel, most of which are from specific events and clubs I’ve participated in.

Here’s just a sampling of my 25+ pieces of CHC gear, including a few from the school bookstore. (Ignore the wrinkles!)

As a Liberal Arts college, Chestnut Hill provides students the opportunity to expand the multiple facets learned in their curriculum and incorporate that knowledge into their membership in various inspiring clubs organized on campus. Last night I was given the chance to go to the first meeting of CHC’s Poetry Club. I was enthralled in seeing an innovative group of undergraduates collaborating together not only to express themselves, but also to better their college community. I immediately decided to join.

Last year the Poetry Club was not up and running till two months before summer vacation. Since this will be the first official full-year that the club will be in progress, many of the members are excited to make the organization well-known on campus. There is a diverse group of students in the club – ranging from athletes to psychology majors, all in different years. For a typical meeting, everyone gets a chance to read their own work while others sit in a circle and listen; the creative process is also explored and members are able to gather insight on each others writing techniques. As treasurer, Angel Garcia candidly emphasized the clubs principle purpose: “This [club] is about us”; the club allows students to express themselves freely in an art form they truly love and permits members to “hear the voice of the people that [they] live with,” (as Angel amply stated). Moreover, the Poetry Club does not halt merely at the poetic genre, but rather incorporates other forms of literature, music and song-writing. The club will also partner up with other clubs on campus, which is commonly found.

Additional promising innovations for the club include a bi-weekly show to air on T.V., “Open-Mic Nights”, concerts with local bands, coffee house collaborations in Philadelphia, and interaction with other college poetry groups in the city. I was especially excited to hear that the club will have appearances by Spoken Word Artists such as Saul Williams;Saul Williams at Lollapalooza 2008 when I saw him live! it is a remarkable feat that the Poetry Club allows Chestnut Hill students a chance to witness professional artists executing their poetry and words. The truly amazing thing about the Poetry Club is it invites inspirational motivation for students to continue expressing their individuality. That proves to be quite an accomplishment for a club, and Chestnut Hill has numerous other clubs with equally positive messages, fun activities and achievements.

Starting college and making new friends can be a terrifying experience—trust me, I’ve done it twice now. Luckily, there are a few things–like Griffin Days, sports teams, and clubs–that can make the transition a whole lot easier. My favorite method, though? Facebook.

We all know about the many ways Facebook can be used to procrastinate, but it’s also a great way to connect with classmates, especially over the summer. Through the various CHC-related groups and pages, incoming and prospective students can get a taste of CHC life and meet some of the great CHC students. Into sports? Check out the groups for soccer, softball, tennis, lacrosse, or volleyball. More musically inclined? There’s a group for the music department. For those who want to build a strong community, there’s Campus Ministry (a group and a page) and FADD (a.k.a. Fighting Against Dangerous Decisions). There are groups for our media ventures, including Scholar-Gypsy-Radio, the Media/TV Club, the CHC Insider (TV), and the Computer Club. The student government, the student activities office, and CHAT (Chestnut Hill Activity Team) are all Facebooking, too.

Interested in checking out the more social aspects of CHC? Head over to the Chestnut Hill Trio Fan Club or Chestnut Hill Look-a-Likes.

And, of course, there’s a group for the Chestnut Hill College class of 2012, just as there will be groups for the classes of 2013, 2014, 2015… With all the Facebook connections you can make, you’ll feel like a Griffin before you even mail your registration!
