What’s great about going to Chestnut Hill College (CHC) is that it’s easy to be kept in the know about what’s happening on campus. CHC prides itself on being able to constantly communicate with its students about campus affairs. Though students can easily check out the many flyers that are posted around campus to find out when the Spring Formal is, or read the decorated bulletin boards that line the main hallway in Fournier to see what the ALD honors society is up too, many students on campus are connecting with CHC clubs through Facebook.

Almost every major club on campus and department has a Facebook page. It’s easy to be kept informed with all the happenings on campus when students become fans of their favorite campus groups, clubs, and organizations.

There are several CHC Facebook pages that students join, but I wanted to offer my top Facebook picks to YOU future Griffins.

Chestnut Hill College: CHC has its very own Facebook page where you can access pictures, great informational resources, contact information, access to a CHC calendar, and get the low down on past events and traditions that the college has. Also, through this page you are able to get updates on other departments such as CHC athletics and Logue Library. Pressed for cash, but wish to explore Philly? Thanks to Student Activities new,  “Fall in Love with Philly” reduced ticketing program, visiting Philly on a budget is easier than ever. With $3 One Day SEPTA Independence Passes, $5 tickets to the Philadelphia Zoo, and $3 tickets to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, planning a fun-filled day in Philly on a budget, is a cinch. The mission of the reduced ticketing program, is to give you, the student, more freedom and activities during the weekend.  Often, it is easy to get into the habit of staying on campus every weekend; however, this program gives students on a college budget, a chance to branch out and experience the city of Brotherly Love.

To acquire tickets, one must go to the Student Activities Office, which is located on the 3rd floor of St. Joseph’s Hall, with a valid Chestnut Hill Student ID. Students are able to purchase 2 tickets with their ID, but it’s important to note that tickets are distributed on a first come, first serve basis. Therefore, don’t be tardy! Plan on visiting the Student Activities Office early to insure that you get  your tickets. Typically, tickets for a specific date will be sold one month before the event. If you have any questions about the program, feel free call Kim Cooney, the Director of Students Activities, at 215-753-3648, or e-mail her at cooneyk@chc.edu. Similarly, if you’d like to learn more about the various events held on campus, become a fan of Chestnut Hill’s Student Activities page on facebook at: //www.facebook.com/pages/Philadelphia-PA/CHC-Student-Activities/138944257027?ref=ts, or  on twitter at: http://twitter.com/CHCACTIVITIES

    Part 2: The Griffin

The Griffin is Chestnut Hill’s college newspaper. With the first publication coming out in mid-October, Editors-in-Chief Tammy Schaaffe and Cait O’Driscoll are working hard to make sure that the Chestnut Hill College community is in the know.

The newspaper has several sections: Campus Affairs, Sports, Arts & Entertainment, National/International News, & introducing Warm & Fuzzies which keep the college community up-to-date on what’s going on in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, and the nation.

Section Editors oversee the sections (obviously) and make sure the writers are getting the information they need to write such wonderful articles. Max Kaplan heads Campus Affairs – Tom Hagerty oversees Sports – Jenny Mejia and Julie Cassidy are in charge of Arts & Entertainment – Cora Mahon is introducing Warm & Fuzzies this semester – Liz Connor covers National/International News.

Kate Sprandio and I are the copy-editors of The Griffin. It’s our job to make sure the writers have perfected (okay, maybe not perfected) the AP Style. AP Style is a little tricky if you’re new to newspaper writing, like me. However, I know that I can ask anyone on The Griffin staff for help when I need it.

The Griffin is always looking for interested writers, photographers, and those who know In-Design for layout. If you are interested, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Editors-in-Chief Tammy Schaaffe at schaaffet@chc.edu or Cait O’Driscoll at o’driscollc@chc.edu.

Keep your eyes out over the next few weeks for information on joining The Griffin and be sure to read the first publication of the 2009-2010 school year!

Every year, just before Valentine’s Day, CHC’s Student Activities hosts a Create-a-Creature event. You know those Build-a-Bear stores in the mall? Yeah, it’s just like that, except on-campus and FREE.

This year, Create-a-Creature was held on Thursday, February 12, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Mask Corridor (St. Joseph’s Hall). There were 200 animals to stuff, in 8 different varieties: moose, lion, elephant, giraffe, koala bear, black bear, monkey, and cow. Each year, the animals get snatched up more quickly than the last; this year, the Mask Corridor was packed by 12:45 p.m. and the animals were gone by 2:30 p.m.
