When I began my college career, I was anxious to get away from home and totally ready to be on my own.   I decided to go to Chestnut Hill mainly because the other contending college was too close to my house.  It’s only about a half an hour drive, whereas Philadelphia is a good three hours or so from my home in southern Maryland.   This puts me at a location far enough away so I’m not really  tempted to go home every weekend, (nor are my parents tempted to visit every weekend) but still close enough so I don’t need a plane ticket or any major preparations when a visit home is necessary.  I love my family and hometown, but really thought I needed a change of scenery after being in the area for ten years.

Freshman year, my parents made the trip to Philly a few times to see my music concerts and participate in events such as Family Weekend.   Outside of actual school vacations, I only visited home one weekend every few months. CHC offers plenty of activities to keep one occupied during downtime, or there’s always the option of visiting the city and going to museums or clubs there.  The train station is just about a 15 minute walk away, or the SEPTA bus will take you up the hill on a lazy day.  Once at the train station, all you have to do is make the decision where to go.  It costs five bucks to get to center city, but if you’re homesick you can get off at 30th Street Station, buy an AMTRAK ticket to your hometown and be on your way to your family in no time.

    BINGO!

One recent Friday night, my friends and I headed to the Griffin’s Den for a rousing “Fridays After Dark” BINGO tournament. We all received BINGO cards and a giant pile of Skittles to use as our markers. (For some reason, we needed to keep replenishing…) There was also an assortment of pretzels and cookies out for the players to snack on.

To my great surprise, I wound up winning three times… and I didn’t even stay for the whole event! I won in early rounds, so my prizes were jumbo candy bars. As the evening went on, though, the prizes got better. By the time my friends and I left, around 12:30 or 1:00 a.m., the prizes had escalated to T-shirts. (As I’ve said before, every college student loves free T-shirts.)

Just what is “Fridays After Dark”?

Welcome to another very special episode of “It’s The Weekend!!!” starring me — and you, and you, and, yes, you, too. After all, everyone—and I mean, everyone—is invited to come out to Making Time.

What is Making Time, you ask? It’s a rotating party, a wild danceteria marathon, and, no lie, the best nightlife phenomenon-slash-institution in all of Philadelphia. Once a month, party organizers snatch up the best DJs and even some hungry up-and-comers (The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand were just two of the bands that played Making Time before anybody knew who they were.) to play whatever will move the crowd—trance, punk, house, indie rock, hip-hop, 60s funk and soul, whatever and ever. Thousands of pretties out there freaking out. The floor shakes and even the walls seem to start sweating.

You have to dance it to believe it. Look for me. I’ll be shaking my behind in the mezzanine.
