The Chestnut Hill College baseball team ended their season on a great note. The Griffins concluded their third season with the program’s first trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament. Chestnut Hill College finished 16-22 overall and 11-9 in the CACC with three student-athletes garnering all-conference status. Junior outfielder Dan Etherton (Princeton, N.J.), junior catcher Bryan Henry (Columbus, N.J.), and sophomore second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) headlined the lineup and earned all-conference selections. Etherton batted .324 (44-for-136), carried a .493 slugging percentage, knocked in 18 runs, and stole 14 bases en route to a First Team All-CACC selection. Henry received the team MVP and Daywalt was awarded the Coach’s Award.

As it has been mentioned in several previous blog entries, two semesters of Physical Education are required to graduate here at CHC.  Last semester I took Tennis with Janice Kuklick and learned a lot about it that I didn’t know before.  I used to avoid watching tennis matches because I was so confused about what was happening, but I can now watch tennis on TV and understand what’s going on- like when they use words such as love, deuce, ad-in, ad-out, or when the score seems to jump around sporadically.  From taking the class with Janice, I also learned how to play a new sport I’d never even heard of!

    The Basketball Season Has Started!!!

I have been playing organized basketball since I was 15 years old and nothing is more exciting than winning a championship or the first day of practice. Unfortunately practice has not started yet but conditioning has. If you see any basketball players on campus, please don’t let the warm handshake, hug or smile fool you. We are going to work!!

    men's lax

Chestnut Hill’s sports program is constantly expanding, especially in terms of male’s sports teams.  During the academic school year of ’07-’08, CHC welcomed its first men’s baseball team.  This school year, the newest addition to the sports program is men’s lacrosse.  The idea of adding a men’s lacrosse team came about in 2005.  During the summer of ‘08 though, CHC decided to make that idea a reality.  Now, CHC’s lacrosse team is comprised of 36 men.  Men’s home lacrosse games will be played at Victory Field, the turf field located at Plymouth Whitemarsh High school.

I had the chance to get in touch with Coach Richard Carrington, the head men’s lacrosse coach at CHC.  The following are some of the questions he graciously answered for me.

How will you set the precedent for future lacrosse teams here at CHC?

Coach Carrington: “We’re roughly 4 weeks into fall practices, so the team is just starting to form an identity.  One thing that stands out to me is that this group wants this program to be associated with terms like hard work & blue collar.  They prove that every day in practice.  However, it’s easy to work hard and be intense when practice is just starting and the weather is great outside.  The challenge will be if this group can maintain that drive and passion during the frigid late January practices.”

    italy

Traveling internationally is a great opportunity that not everyone has the chance to experience. Whether it is Canada or Asia, most citizens have not had the opportunity to go outside the United States border. Fortunate for me I have been to Europe twice, once in high school and recently this summer.

The pictures (with captions) I will display come from an exclusive, invitation only, Basketball tour of Europe which included the countries of Austria and Italy.

The Chestnut Hill College softball team participated in a tremendous service opportunity during their season. All members of the team helped younger softball players ages 6-14 with batting, fielding, pitching, catching and throwing. Every year the softball team holds multiply clinics to work with community softball teams. The team has had the opportunity to work with many little league organizations before and during their seasons. It is fun and exciting to work with young softball players that have the goal of playing college softball one day. The Chestnut Hill College athletic program volunteers their time to offer clinics for young athletes in the surrounding communities. Chestnut Hill College offers camps and clinics for students interested in sports such as basketball and tennis.

These are a couple pictures from my recent trip to Europe, I was there for two weeks and had a lot of fun. I was there on a sports tour which included Mens Basketball, Womens Basketball and Womens Volleyball. We toured the countries of Austria and Italy, playing 5 different teams. This is just a small sample of a major life experiance. Keep a lookout for the next blog which will include more pics and short discription on each.

Pictures include some basketball games, authentic morano glass hand made right in front of me, and tours of some cities which includes Venice, Italy or Venezia as the locals call it. I represented my country well and had the honor of wearing the number 10 Jersey.
